Best Documentaries on Sustainability to Watch

Sustainability Documentary

The buzz word lately has been sustainability. Fortune 500 companies have been posting and slapping a sustainable label on all of their products. I can’t stress enough the importance of doing your own research and educating yourself on what sustainability really is. These top documentaries below have helped my family. We now think twice about purchasing fast fashion and learning on how to avoiding plastic. I’ve always been transparent with you all, it’s not always convenient to say no to plastic. I have 3 kids and it’s definitely a transition and a long process.

A question I get often, it’s just 1 person trying to make a difference in this world. I response “it’s ONLY one straw” imagine if 8 billion people gave up 1 straw for just a week! If I can avoid using a straw or a single use coffee cup I do. The point of living a minimal and a low waste lifestyle is never to be perfect. Always, teaching my children to make better choices in life. It’s important to educate our children about climate issues, consumerism and food systems. We want to make sustainable living achievable, fun, and accessible for them.

A plastic ocean (2016)

A Plastic Ocean is an award-winning documentary film from Plastic Oceans. Directed by Craig Leeson and has one over a dozen prestigious awards. It was filmed over four years in 20 different locations around the world, to investigate the state of the oceans. It was just sad to see how much plastic we produce and light the consequences of our global disposable lifestyle. Read my blog post “Breaking up with Plastic for a Month” on how I made small changes to minimize plastic in my home.

True Cost (2015)

This is a story about clothing. It’s about the clothes we wear, the people who make them, and the impact the industry is having on our world. The True Cost is a documentary film directed by Andrew Morgan that focuses on fast fashion. This documentary discusses several aspects of the garment industry. Production—mainly exploring the life of low-wage workers in developing countries. The after-effects such as river and soil pollution, pesticide contamination, disease and death.(Wikipedia)This is a great documentary to learn about the fast fashion industry.

Sustainable (2016)

Sustainable is a film about the land, the people who work it and what must be done to sustain it for future generations. A vital investigation of the economic and environmental instability of America’s food system, from the agricultural issues. We face — soil loss, water depletion, climate change, pesticide use — to the community of leaders who are determined to fix it.

Minimalism Film (2015)

Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus invite you into their living-rooms for this intimate series. Together, they dish out simple insights for living simply. Making a big move for us to Hawaii this film made a big impact that we could live a life of less material things and more spiritual happiness.

COWSPIRACY (2014)

The film looks at various environmental concerns, including climate change, water use, deforestation, and ocean dead zones, and suggests that animal agriculture is the primary source of environmental destruction. We only consume meat about 20% of our meals. This documentary makes you think twice about meat consumption.

What are some of the ones that changed the outlook of the world?
